GEORGES BRAQUE
Pal (Bouteille de Bass et Verre sur une Table).

Etching and drypoint printed in black on BFK Rives, 1911. 460x330 mm; 18 1/8x13 inches, full margins. Artist's proof, aside from the edition of 30. Signed in pencil, lower right. Rives watermark. A superb, dark and well-inked impression of this scarce, important etching, with plate tone and crisp, inky plate edges.

Among Braque's most important Cubist printed works, the title derives from the lettering on the bottle of Bass Pale Ale featured at the center of this composition. According to Vallier, "We would meanwhile like to stress that everything leads us to believe these Cubist prints were conceived directly upon the plate. Their composition follows the spirit of the drawings Braque made at this time with painting in mind, but no existent drawings could be considered strict models for his etchings," (Vallier p. 16).
