GEORGES DE FEURE (1868-1943) LE DIABLOTIN. 1894.
30 7/8x23 3/8 inches. J. Weiner, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses in margins; repaired tears in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Le Diablotin was an illustrated literary magazine published in Brussels. This is one of the first posters that de Feure designed, and can be grouped with his other early work (which was mostly for café-concerts) in that they are marked by his use of bright colors. This scene, which is difficult to interpret, features an elegant woman and a devil. They are each holding an oversized writing implement, and appear to be wandering through fantasy land, with decorative vegetation and over-sized butterflies. The highly stylized and creative typography is, as usual, hand drawn by de Feure himself. DFP-II 345, De Feure p. 27, Reims 609, Fit to Print 192.
