At the end of the 19th century, Belgium became a meeting ground for the European Avant-Garde community. The most influential group in Brussels at that time was Les XX (The Twenty). Founded in 1883 by a lawyer, Octave Maus, the group changed its name in 1892 to La Libre Esthetique (The Free Aesthetic). From 1905 to 1914 (except 1906), Lemmen designed the posters for the group's exhibitions. Primarily a portraitist and landscape painter, Lemmen here shows his ability with the graphic arts. Using soft and refined flat tones and only three colors he depicts flowers in a vase. Lemmen 59.
