GEORGES MEUNIER (1869-1942) A LA PLACE CLICHY / ETRENNES. 1897.
48 3/4x34 inches, 124x86 cm. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses and abrasions in margins and image; vertical and horizontal folds.
Georges Meunier designed more than 100 posters, and although his style can be said to be similar to Jules Chéret's, his women are more varied and his palette is actually richer, as he didn't use the restricted color scheme that became Chéret's signature in the 1890s. The toys being advertised for sale at this prominent Parisian department store located near the fashionable 9th and 17th arrondisments are predominantly Japanese in their influence, an indication of the store's sofisticated clientele. The allure, even sexiness of the main female figure also suggests the high-class, liberal nature of the store's customers. One of at least three posters he designed for the toy sale at this prestigious establishment. Meunier 33.
