GEORGES MEUNIER (1869-1942) LOX. 1895.
481/2x341/2 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B: tears in margins affecting image; tape on verso; creases and staining in margins; vertical and horizontal folds. Paper.
Of all the minions working under the master at the Chaix printing house, Meunier was one of Cheret's most accomplished disciples. In the individual style which he developed, his women are more varied and his palette of colors is actually richer, as he didn't use the restricted coloring system that became Cheret's signature in the 1890s. Here, a dashing moustachioed cyclist is obviously trying to seduce a young lady, who, for the time being, is more interested in enjoying her drink. Lox was a brand of wine (the most famous among the genre being Vin Mariani), fortified with mildly narcotic extracts of Coca or Kola Nut, which gave the drink a "tonic" effect. An exquisite image. La Petite Reine 77, Masters 1900 p. 15.
