GEORGES RENEVEY (1915-?) 7ME BOL D'OR INTERNATIONAL DU YACHTING A VOILE / MENTON. 1954.
39 1/2x23 1/2 inches, 100 1/2x60 cm. Monegasque, Monte-Carlo.
Condition B+: repaired tears and time-staining at edges; minor abrasions in image.
Known as a graphic designer, illustrator and calligrapher, Renevey may best be remembered as part of the French Resistance during World War II. He designed a number of posters in the late 1940s and early 1950s, including a few for the American Export Lines, Gilardi (wine) and a "Meeting Motonautique" in Nice. Although little information exists about the Gold Cup Sailing and Yachting event so beautifully captured on this poster, in which the sea and the star-filled nighttime sky become one, research shows that the first time this event was held was 1948, making the definitive date of this poster 1954. Azur 324.
