GEORGES ROUAULT
Automne.

Color aquatint, 1938. 510x665 mm; 201/8x261/4 inches, full margins. Edition of approximately 50-200, aside from the numbered edition of 175. Printed by Lacourière, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this large, important print, with vibrant colors.

According to Johnson, "Various sources are inconclusive on the extent of unnumbered prints in the editions in color of Automne, Le Christ en croix and La Baie des trepasses. The number may vary from 50 to an excess of 200 impressions." (Johnson, Ambroise Vollard Editeur, New York, 1977, p. 150) We have located only a handful of unnumbered impressions at auction in the past 20 years, which leads us to reason that the actual edition of these impressions is closer to (or fewer than) 50 than 200. Chapon/Rouault 288 c; Wofsy 285.
