GEORGES ROUAULT
Seigneur, c'est vous, je vous reconnais.

Aquatint, 1927. 577x454 mm; 223/4x18 inches, wide margins. Edition of 425. Printed by Jacquemin, Paris. Published by Vollard, Paris. From Miserere. A very good, dark impression.

Perhaps the most religious artist of the 20th-century, he once stated, "My ambition is to be able to some day paint a Christ so moving that those who see Him will be converted," Rouault's (1871-1958) graphic work is indebted to Rembrandt both for this focus on the Bible and for its bold chiaroscuro. This is one of 58 aquatints that Rouault created for the "Miserere" portfolio, a comprehensive expression of his devout Catholic vision. Chapon/Rouault 85; Wofsy 139.
