The Bengal-Nagpur Railway Company was registered in London in 1887 to construct a more direct route between Calcutta and Bombay. The management of the railway was taken over by the Government of India in 1944.

The Black Pagoda, illustrated here, is the nickname of the famous Konark [Konarak] Sun Temple in Odisha, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its original construction dating back to the 13th century, the Hindu temple is dedicated to the sun god Surya.
