Jute, which has a long history of being grown in Bengal, is a vegetable fiber that can be spun into cloth. Under British rule, the jute industry in Bengal flourished and the material was sailed to Calcutta on ships that would have been a regular sight on the Brahmaputra River. Tait worked for the publicity department of the Indian State Railways, for whom he designed over a dozen posters and other publicity materials.
