GERMAN SCHOOL, LATE 16TH-CENTURY
Portrait of Caspar Olevian.

Gouache and watercolor on cream laid paper mounted on laid paper, 1566. 160x100 mm; 61/4x4 inches. Ex-collection Holtkott, ink stamp verso (not in Lugt).

Born at Trier in 1536, Olevian was among the most important figures of the German Reformation. At 13 years old, he was sent to Paris to continue his education in the law and there came under the influence of John Calvin's (1509-1564) teachings. He returned to Trier in 1559 and later settled in Heildelberg where he became a leading reformer and published his most influential work, The Substance of the Covenant of Grace, 1585. He died accidentally on March 15, 1587.
