Gifford Beal (1879-1956) was a prominent American painter who exhibited two paintings in the Armory Show. Beal studied under William Merritt Chase and was also greatly influenced by Childe Hassam. After taking classes of Impressionist painting at the Art Students League, Beal served as their president from 1914 to 1929. Beal's Flowering Tree, Figures and The Lake, Central Park, New York (lot 216) are examples of the New York-centric Impressionist landscapes the artist is best known for.
