Additional Details

first state of a scarce engraving. Gill, a great admirer of Lawrence, created two illustrations for Lady Chatterley's Lover: two states of this erotic entanglement of Constance Chatterley and Mellors, which was never used in any edition or other publication, and another enrgaving of Mellors, using himself as the model, which was subsequently published as the frontispiece of his work Clothing without Cloth (1931). Skelton/Physick 728 for second state; this first state lacks the shading and background of grass and branches added to the second version. The artist's personal file contained neither an impression nor a record sheet of either state, though one was among the collection of Evan Gill. Versions of each state are in the Gill collection at The Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin.
