Begun in 1932, the Venice Film Festival became an annual event in 1935, held in conjunction with the city's Biennale. From1942, it was suspended for three years because of World War II. Krayer was a graphic designer and illustrator. He designed several different posters for the film festival between the 1930s and 50s, a few of which are variations on this evocative image of a gondola casting a shadow of a filmstrip.
