GINO SEVERINI
La Modiste.

Linoleum cut on Japan paper, 1916. 190x130 mm; 7 1/2x5 inches, full margins. Artist's proof, aside from the edition of 15. Signed, dedicated and inscribed "epreuve d'artiste" in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression of this scarce, early linoleum cut.

We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 30 years.

Though the printmaking technique known as the linoleum cut was not highly popular, or even well known, with artists until the 1940s, there were early practitioners, like the important Italian Futurist artist Severini (1883-1966), who eschewed the more common and comparable woodcut technique for this new medium. The linoleum cut technique was first introduced to artists in the United States when it was displayed in New York in 1911 by the Czech émigré Vojtech Preissig. Meloni 11.
