Additional Details

fourth printing, inscribed for erwin glikes, additional signature below and several small original sketches by ginsberg on the title. These include a sunflower with human face, a skull within a six-pointed star surmounted by halo, and an early example of Ginsberg's "three fish" symbol (or, "Buddha's Footprint") that he would later have incorporated into the design of his books published by Harper Collins. A laid-in card from Glikes indicates that the occasion for the signing was a visit by Ginsberg and Gregory Corso on June 4, 1964. About two years earlier Ginsberg had first encountered the fish symbol: "I saw the three fish one head, carved on insole of naked Buddha Footprint stone at Bodh-Gaya [in Uttar Pradesh, India] under the Bo-tree" (quoted in The Catholic Worker, May 1967).
