GIORGIO DE CHIRICO
Bucefalo.

Color lithograph printed in beige and black with hand coloring in watercolor, 1969. 505x365 mm; 20x14 1/2 inches, full margins. One of only 15 unique impressions with hand coloring in watercolor by the artist, aside from the edition of 99. Signed, titled and inscribed "(colorata a mano)" in pencil, lower margin. With the artist's blind stamp lower left. Published by Alberto Caprini, Rome, with the blind stamp lower right. A very good impression of this extremely scarce work.

Bucephalus, or Bucefalo in Italian, was the horse of Alexander the Great, and one of the most famous horses of antiquity. De Chirico (1888-1978, see lots 376-378) likely based his depiction on the first century BC mosaic of Alexander the Great riding Bucephalus in the Battle of Issus, now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples. Brandani 78.
