GIOVANNI B. CASTIGLIONE
Tobit Burying the Dead.

Etching, circa 1650. 209x300 mm; 81/4x113/4 inches, thread margins. A superb, well-inked impression with all the fine lines printing clearly.

According to his early biographers, Sopriani and Ratti, Castiglione (1609-1664), a close contemporary of Rembrandt, was especially influenced by Rembrandt's prints. This work in particular, one of 3 night scenes from the 1640s that center on the theme of burial, "show Castiglione's careful study of Rembrandt. The figure types with fur hats and the powerful chiaroscuro defined by layers of dense hatching are purely Rembrandtesque, although Castiglione's chiaroscuro is much softer." (Bambach/Orenstein, Genoa, Drawings and Prints, 1530-1800, New York, 1996, p. 48). The current lot closely resembles the preceeding lot by Rembrandt in the chiaroscuro and treatment of the figures around a burial scene. See also lots 36 and 37. Bartsch 5; Percy 20.
