GIOVANNI B. PIRANESI
Diverse Maniere d'Adornare i Camini.

Collection of 15 etchings, 1769. Each approximately 840x623 mm; 33 1/4x24 1/2 inches, wide margins. Very good impressions with strong contrasts.

In the 1760s Piranesi (1720-1778) adopted an aesthetic of pluralistic openness with regard to the most diverse styles of antiquity. This eclectic attitude found visual expression in hisDiverse Maniere d'Adornare i Camini (or Diverse Ways of Ornamenting Chimneypieces), published in 1769, which contains a freely-assorted collection of Greek, Etruscan, Roman and Egyptian forms. He proposed in his introduction that the purpose of the work was, "To show what use an able architect may make of the ancient monuments by properly adapting them to our own manners and customs." Piranesi's groundbreaking work widely influenced the following generation of architects and designers during the late 18th/early 19th century. See Ficacci pages 512-557.
