GIOVANNI BATTISTA FALDA
Le Fontane di Roma; Le Fontane delle Ville di Frascati; Le Fontane ne' Palazzi e ne Giardini di Roma; Le Fontane del Giardino Estense in Tivoli.

Bound volume with 4 parts and 99 etchings, 4 engraved title pages and 4 etched dedication pages, circa 1675-91. 270x395 mm; 10 3/4x15 1/2 inches (sheets), full margins. Published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi, Rome. Ex-collection Thomas Gayfere; and Leo S. Olschki, with their bookplates on the front paste down. Very good impressions.

Falda (1643-1678) was born in northern Italy and sent to Rome at an early age to work in the studio of Gian Lorenzo Bernini. He was commissioned by the Roman publisher de Rossi to make a series of prints representing the fountains of Rome, which after his untimely death at age 35 was expanded into 4 parts total with etchings by other printmakers (including views of fountains at Frascati, at outlying Roman villas and at the Villa d'Este in Tivoli). Bruni/Evans 436.
