GIOVANNI MARIA MATALONI (1869-1944) FESTA DI CERVARA. 1904.
94x44 inches, 239x112. Stab. A. Marzi, Rome.
Condition B+: repaired tears, restored losses, creases and restoration in margins and image. Three sheets.
Italian artists brought Art Nouveau to an unequaled level of elegant, allegorical, decorative exuberance. Here to promote an international artist's carnival in Cervara, a woman with a mask in her hand, clings to the boughs of a tree, which are intertwined into an improbably ornate frame. That the event was only for a single evening means that fewer of these posters would have been printed than for a longer advertising campaign. Menegazzi 42.
