GIOVANNI OTTAVIANI (after Raphael)
Loggie di Rafaele nel Vaticano.

Bound volume with 40 etchings after the Vatican frescoes by Raphael and etched half-title perspectival view of the loggie by Giovanni Volpato, 1770. 1250x480 mm; 49 1/4x19 inches (sheets), full margins. Binding worn. Very good impressions with strong contrasts.

The Raphael fresco decorations in the Vatican's three-storied balconies known as the 'Logge' quickly became famous, and various suites of plates were issued from the 17th century onward. However, this set was the first to attempt to show all the decoration of the pilasters and pillars. A set of the present engravings stimulated Catherine the Great to have a replica of the Logge built at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
