Patrone's posters for various Italian shipping lines (Cosulich, Italian Lines / Flotte Riunite, Lloyd Triestino and other international lines such as the American Export Lines) all bespeak a mannerist Art Deco style, particularly in his images of ships, which appear archetypically fluid and graceful. This image focuses less on the vessel and more on the spirit of adventure that comes with boat travel to Africa. Patrone, rather incongruously, depicts a man in a pith helmet, on the deck of a ship, shading his eyes from the glaring sun of the Southern hemisphere. The Navigazione Generale Italiana began service from Genoa to Capetown and Durban on the Duilio and Giulio Cesare in the 1930s. This is the German version.
