Tripoli, the capital and chief port of Libya, looms large in the annals of military history. From 1801 to 1805, the new United States of America went to war with Tripoli, which reverted to Ottoman rulership in 1835. As a result of the 1911-12 Turko-Italian War, Italy took control of the country. Libya became one of the major battlegrounds in North Africa during the Second World War. Orientalist p. 89.
