Along with Lucio Fontana and Alberto Burri, Capogrossi (1900-1972) was one of the main exponents of Italian informal art (or Arte Informale), which paralleled mid-century Abstract Expressionism in the United States and stressed the expressive impulses of the artist rather than the importance of form heralded in earlier movements such as Futurism or Cubism.
