GIUSEPPE CESARI, IL CAVALIERE D'ARPINO (CIRCLE OF)
(Rome 1568-1640 Rome)
The Canonization of St. Francis de Paul.

Pen and black ink and brown wash on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 320x248 mm; 125/8x93/4 inches. Titled and inscribed "Josepin" in ink, lower margin recto.

The current work is related to the fresco of the same subject by Cesari in SS. Trinità dei Monti, Rome, circa 1584-85, executed when the artist was in his late teens. Today the fresco is heavily damaged, making the current work an important document of what it had looked like. There is a portrait of the artist in the far right background.

Published in Roettgen, Il Cavaliere d'Arpino, Rome, 2002, number 6b (illustrated), as "un disegno di buon qualita." Roettgen attributed the current work to a still unknown 16th-century French artist in the circle of Cesari. Only one preparatory drawing by Cesari, a study of a nude, is known for the fresco at SS. Trinità dei Monti.
