GIUSEPPE RICCOBALDI DEL BAVA (1887-1976) FIAT. 1928.
76 3/4x52 1/4 inches. Barabino & Graveve, Genoa.
Condition A-: minor distress along vertical and horizontal folds; minor tears in margins. Two sheets. Framed.
Descended from a noble family, Riccobaldi's artistic career began when he and his brother created a puppet theatre. He studied drawing, painting and set design. He supported himself selling illustrations to books and magazines, and ultimately began designing movie posters. From 1927 on, he mostly designed travel posters, but his advertisements for various products and companies remain his most creative and daring work. Using intensive Cubisto-Futuristico influences, Riccobaldi designed a handful of spectacular posters like this, one of his best. The powerful cars are ascending to lofty heights along the curves of a mighty ziggurat, which is supported by pillars formed by the company name. Bolaffi p. 186.
