GLENN LIGON (1960 - )
Untitled (My Life in America).

Oil stick and pencil on thick wove paper, 1994. 546x1270 mm; 21 1/2x50 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. Also inscribed "Redo in 2" letters" and numbered 1 in pencil, lower margin.

Provenance: gift from the artist; private collection, Pittsburgh (1994).

This large work on paper is a maquette by Glenn Ligon used for the 1994-95 Equal Rights & Justice group exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA. This particular quotation is by James Baldwin and is taken from The Evidence of Things Not Seen, his 1985 book on the Atlanta Child Murders. Ligon used these sketches to locate the installation of his text on the walls - they were later done by hand in black oil stick on the wall of a circular room built in the gallery.
