Discovered in 1817, the frescoes of the Ajanta caves were created between the 2nd century B.C. and the 7th century A.D. Religious in nature and artistically complex, the paintings cover the walls and ceilings of chapels, temples and monasteries which are all carved into the side of a ravine.
