Discovered in 1817, the frescoes of the Ajanta caves were created between the 2nd century B.C. and the 7th century A.D. Within a complex of 29 caves, the frescoes serve as a picture book to teach novices of the various incarnations of the Buddha. Religious in nature and artistically complex, the paintings cover the walls and ceilings of chapels, temples and monasteries which are all carved into the side of a ravine.
