first separate illustrated edition, offprinted from Nova Acta Physico-Medica Academiae Caesareae Leopoldinae-Carolinae Naturae Curiosorum, Volume 15, part 1. The unillustrated text was first published in 1820 in Goethe's Zur Naturwissenschaft überhaupt, besonders zur Morphologie, Volume 1, part 2. "Goethe believed that in 1784 he demonstrated the presence of the intermaxillary (premaxillary) bone in man, proving an anatomical connection between man and the lower animals.
