Additional Details

". . . The only persons I see are French families brought here, as you are, as I and mine are, by the difficulties of the situation. I . . . contribute to charity . . . tomorrow evening by associating myself with the organizers of a public concert . . . which I accepted only to be able to contribute to the second of the unfortunate victims that you spoke of, and who are the special aim of the concert . . . . "
In 1870, to escape the Franco-Prussian War, Gounod moved with his family to London, where they lived for five years before returning to their home in Saint-Cloud.
