Along with American Abstract Expressionist masters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, Hartigan is widely recognized for carrying figurative painting into abstraction. In 1958 she was the only woman chosen to exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in "The New American Painting." Aware of the lesser regard for female artists in the male-dominated world of abstract painting she often times signed her early work "George Hartigan".
