Born in Buffalo, NY in 1932, Grace Knowlton attended Milton Academy, eventually training at Smith College and later at Columbia University's Teacher College. This large-scale industrial piece isolates a photograph of rusted pipes in a layered background of black watercolor. It is emblematic of Knowlton's artistic practice of reinterpreting various found media such as clay, sheet metal, concrete, copper, bronze, and wicker to break "conventional boundaries," creating "dialogues in line and form."
