In 1987, Iturbide was awarded the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Memorial prize for a photo essay she developed about the indigenous people in the matriarchal town of Juchitán, which is in the state of Oaxaca. Among this body of work is Magnolia, a portrait of a Muxe (pronounced MOO-Shay), an individual who identifies as neither male nor female.
