GRAHAM SIMMONS MAQUETTE FOR A BRITISH RAILWAY POSTER / BEACH SCENE. Circa 1920s.
301/4x471/2 inches.
Condition B+: restored loss in lower left margin and image. Gouache, tempera and pencil on paper. Framed.
Although no record of a poster with this image seems to exist, it certainly exudes all of the elements normally found in the British travel posters of the era: Coquetry, fashion, elegance, family, sun and crowds. Simmons actively worked as an artist for the LNER. Most of his images feature sport scenes, or sportsmen (a World War I poster he designed shows a soldier and two sportsmen beneath the caption, "The Army isn't all work"), and here, an elegant man with a tennis racquet is flirting with a young woman beneath a stylish parasol.
