first edition. Sylvester Graham was an early pioneer of what became the health food movement. Most notably, he advocated baking bread from whole wheat without chemical additives. The Graham cracker was designed on the same lines; today's sugary snack food of the same name would cause Mr. Graham great consternation. This treatise discusses not only how to properly bake bread, but offers a history of bread, Graham's general "Laws of Diet," and an interesting chapter titled "Who Should Make Bread" which concludes that only wives and mothers should be entrusted with this most important task. Graham's teachings extended well beyond food to temperance and chastity, but this was his first work devoted solely to cookery.
