Additional Details

Tyner's letter: "Nathanial Page, whom I have appointed a special agent at your request, desires an advance of two or three hundred dollars on his salary. It is unusual to grant such applications, but I will do as you wish about it. You can, if you please, address me a private note by my messenger who carries this to the Executive Mansion . . . ."
Grant's reply: "If the advance asked can be made without inconsistency I wish you would make it. If not Mr. Page should borrow the money and leave his act. with the Dept. in settlement. . . ."
