Both volumes of this classic biography are signed by American novelist Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941), with this inscription on the flyleaf on Volume I: "This book belongs to Sherwood Anderson and is loaned, not given to one Chas. H. Frank (alias Andy Frank) of Marion Va. Sherwood Anderson." Anderson began visiting western Virginia in 1925 and married a Marion native in 1933, so the inscription probably dates from between 1925 and 1941.
