Two rare and unusual trolley cards for Coney Island's Luna Park. Coney Island came to national prominence at the end of the 19th century as the horse racing capital of America. The history of the Coney Island amusement centers is filled with fires and lost dreams. In 1895 the Sea Lion Park (the world's first enclosed amusement park) opened to the public. Next came Steeplechase Park in 1897 (burned down in 1907), Dreamland in 1904 (burned down in 1911) and finally Luna Park in 1903 (burned down in 1944). "When Luna Park opened on May 16, 1903, it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen. . . [it had been designed as ] an environment entirely at odds with the Beaux-Arts movement of the time. The lines, colors, and shapes were constantly changing. Rather than the usual central tower, there were spires and minarets everywhere. And it was immense."
