Ringl and Pit were the childhood nicknames of Grete Stern (Ringl) and Ellen Auerbach (Pit). Both studied with Walter Peterhans, a photography instructor at the Bauhaus. Together, they established a photography studio in 1930 in Berlin, but their promising partnership ended in 1933 when they decided to emigrate. Often using mannequins, wigs, and other symbols of femininity, Stern and Auerbach worked on the representation of the "modern woman," and questioned the artifice and masquerade of feminine identity.
