". . . [T]hanks for your kind invitation to come and see you and your dear family in Birmingham. . . . [I]f my health shall permit me to visit Cambridge in the beginning of June, it should be very delightful to spend a few days in Birmingham afterwards. If possible, I should wish to have Frants Beyer in my . . . pocket. . . . [H]e is, what the Germans say: 'mein guter Geist'--my good spirit. . . ."
Charles Harding (1839-1904) was a lawyer who served as a Governor of the University of Birmingham and vice-president of the Birmingham Musical Festival.
Although poor health prevented him from attending the ceremony held on June 13, 1893, Grieg was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Cambridge--along with Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, and Max Bruch.
