Additional Details

One could call this Grigg atlas Finley's reduced-size New General Atlas (first published in 1824) or a "mini-Finley". While the 1824 atlas had 60 maps, including one of each individual state, here we have 40 maps - every map about 10% smaller in size - with maps of individual "regions" of the U.S. - each map showing more than one state. For example, one of those regional maps shows Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas Territory. But otherwise, the maps in this Grigg New General Atlas have the "look and feel" of maps in a Finley atlas - the same simple borders colored in pink, the same bright full coloring within the maps, the same quality of engraving. This is because J.H. Young who engraved the maps here is the same Young who engraved the maps for Finley's 1824 atlas. The copyright on verso of title page indicates that the maps were engraved and the atlas first published in 1827. A copy of this edition of the atlas has not been located in institutional or private collections. Rumsey 287 lists an 1828 edition.
