Additional Details

Carbons sets were sent to astronauts Armstrong, Borman, Conrad, Cooper, Grissom, Lovell, McDivitt, Schirra, Scott, Stafford, White, and Young for review as per instructions stated in an original letter sent from World Book Encyclopedia Science Service in Houston, TX, dated May 26, 1966. This is the actual carbon set sent to Cooper. Originally planned to be published in late summer 1966, the book was to be more of a dialogue between Gus and his two sons, Scott and Mark. Gus and the astronauts had a direct conversation with the Grissom boys through-out all eight chapters, answering their questions, describing their individual flights, and covering many of the facts that were not part of the official NASA record. Grissom states in his introduction: "I wanted to let Scott and Mark know and understand just what sort of a weird and wonderful enterprise their father and his friends were lucky enough to have had a part in fulfilling... no holds barred." Various delays and then the tragic death of Grissom in the Apollo 1 fire necessitated a complete re-write of the book, which was finally published in 1968, a year after Grissom's death.
