Dr. Stephen Pepper examined the work in person and confirmed the attribution of the drawing. It is possibly related to the head of Cleopatra in the picture in Sir Denis Mahon's collection from around 1639-40 (Pepper, Guido Reni, Novara, 1988, number 181, plate 168).
Based on a photograph, Veronika Birke doubted this attribution on March 17, 1997.
