GUILLAUME ROGER (1867-1943) MARIA MARIANI.
59x30 3/4 inches. Bourgerie & Cie., St. Denis.
Condtion B: restored losses, repaired tear, extensive overpainting and creases in margins and image.
Guillaume Roger was primarily a landscape painter who is known to have designed a few tourist posters in the 1920s. With this image, we discover that he also designed at least one poster advertising a performer. Maria Mariani appears to be a dancer, but her name has not survived the test of time, and she is completely unknown today. The soft-tone image reflects strong Art Nouveau design elements, including the flowing gown, the long hair and the large flower. Guillaume also employs an interesting outlining technique to accentuate the graceful movement of her left arm. While the flowing graphics of the poster make for an undeniably attractive design, the actual advertising is a little weak, as the performer's name only appears in a small circle.
