Hallström was a renowned Swedish painter and art teacher. His focus was largely a romantic, historical vision of traditional life on the Swedish island of Björkö, where he settled with his family in 1912. A contemporary brochure for the Scandinavian Art Exhibition explains that Hallström "has a strong feeling for the decorative, which is displayed to advantage in his tapestries and vignettes, and notably in the strikingly suggestive and characteristic poster that he has designed for the present exhibition." Charles Matlock Price, in Poster Design states that this poster "is as extraordinary in color as it is in design" (Price p. 96). The exhibition itself was held to "to cultivate closer relations between the people of the United States of America and the leading Scandinavian countries, to strengthen the bonds between Scandinavian Americans, and to advance the knowledge of Scandinavian culture among the American public, particularly among the descendants of Scandinavians."
