GUNTHER GERZSO
Paisaje.

Lithograph, 1988. 495x700 mm; 19 1/2x27 1/2 inches, full margins. Artist's proof. Signed, dated, titled and inscribed "A.P." in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Ernest de Soto, San Francisco. A superb impression.

Ex-collection Andrew Gerzso, the son of the artist.

Gerzso (1915-2000) was born in Mexico City and worked from the 1930s onward in theatre and film principally as a set designer (toward the end of his career, he collaborated with John Huston in Under the Volcano, 1984). Looking back to his early years, he had lived with his wealthy uncle Dr. Hans Wendland in Lugano, Switzerland, and among his uncle's old master through modern paintings, Gerszo started painting in the late 1930s and printmaking thereafter. He was notably inspired by Paul Klee, whom he'd met in Switzerland during his teens, while in his uncle's care.
