GUS BOFA (GUSTAVE BLANCHOT) (1885-1968) . . . ET CA? 1910.
55 1/2x38 1/2 inches. Ch. Verneau, Paris.
Condition A: minor restoration in top margin; minor creases in image.
The Ba-Ta-Clan was originally designed to look like a Chinese Pagoda and is one of the oldest and most popular Café Concerts in Paris (it still exists in Paris, as a disco with stage shows!). The nature of the revue being advertised, "et ca" ("and this?"), is made tittilatingly clear in Bofa's image in which a young, sexy girl, carrying a huge hat box, is arousing interest in an elderly passer-by. Not for the prudish, the show, which opened on the 21st of October 1910, was the usual popular, sexy, humorous fare of which Parisians couldn't get enough. It is a charming and witty poster: note the little dog at the bottom saying "Oh my God", adding to the fun. Bofa, San Millan.
