GUS BOFA (GUSTAVE BLANCHOT) SALON DE L'ARAIGNEE. 1920.
41 5/8x30 1/4 inches. Devambez, Paris.
Condition B: tears and creases in margins and image; minor losses and stress along vertical and horizontal folds; pencil in right margin. Japan.
Gus Bofa was one of the most prolific illustrators working between the wars. He became director of Le Rire magazine in 1909 and took over Sourire in 1912, as well as working for countless other magazines. He also found time to take on advertising jobs, and around 1910 even published a self-promotional booklet, "l'Affiche Gus Bofa." Here, a green-faced character in a blue shirt and tie is showing his discerning eye while visiting a colorful art exhibition; lettering in white, yellow and green.
